Frequently Asked Questions
What is SMSTS training?
SMSTS training, short for Site Management Safety Training Scheme, is designed to equip construction managers with the knowledge and confidence to manage health and safety on site effectively. The training focuses on real-world responsibilities, legal duties, and practical decision-making, helping managers create safer, more compliant construction environments.
Who should complete SMSTS training?
SMSTS training is ideal for anyone who has responsibility for managing construction sites or overseeing safety standards. This includes site managers, project managers, contracts managers, and those working under CDM regulations. If you’re accountable for people, processes, or safety performance on site, this training is highly relevant.
How long does SMSTS training take?
The full SMSTS training programme runs over five days. Some providers deliver this as a single working week, while others spread the training across shorter sessions over two weeks or more to suit busy schedules.
Is SMSTS training challenging?
SMSTS training is detailed and in-depth, but it’s designed to be practical rather than academic. Tutors use real site scenarios, group discussions, and examples you’ll recognise from everyday construction work. Most learners find it demanding but achievable, especially if they stay engaged throughout.
What does SMSTS training cover?
The training covers a wide range of essential topics, including:
Health and safety law in construction
Risk assessments and method statements
Site inductions and toolbox talks
Identifying and controlling hazards
Environmental management
Accident prevention and investigation
Building a strong safety culture on site
All content is geared towards helping managers apply what they learn directly to live construction sites.
Can SMSTS training be completed online?
Yes. SMSTS training is available via live virtual classrooms. This allows you to complete the training remotely while still interacting with an experienced tutor and other delegates in real time, just as you would in a physical classroom.
What is the pass mark for SMSTS training?
To successfully complete SMSTS training, learners must achieve 80% in the final assessment. This typically includes multiple-choice questions and scenario-based exercises that test how you apply safety knowledge in practical situations.
How long does an SMSTS certificate last?
Once you’ve completed the training and passed the assessment, your SMSTS certificate is valid for five years.
What happens if my SMSTS certificate expires?
If your certificate expires, you’ll need to complete the full five-day SMSTS training again. To avoid this, it’s strongly recommended to complete the refresher training before your certificate reaches its expiry date.
Do I need SMSTS refresher training?
Yes. To keep your qualification valid, you must complete a two-day SMSTS refresher training course within five years of passing the original training.
What’s the difference between SMSTS and SSSTS training?
SMSTS training is aimed at those with overall responsibility for site safety and management. SSSTS training, on the other hand, is designed for supervisors who manage smaller teams and need a solid understanding of their health and safety duties without full site-wide responsibility.
Is SMSTS training a legal requirement?
SMSTS training itself isn’t legally mandatory. However, construction law requires employers to ensure that managers are competent to manage health and safety. Completing SMSTS training is one of the most widely accepted ways to demonstrate that competence.
Can you fail SMSTS training?
Yes, it is possible to fail if the required pass mark isn’t achieved. That said, the training is structured to prepare learners thoroughly. If you actively participate and meet the threshold for a resit, you’ll usually be given the opportunity to resit the exam on the same day.
How much does SMSTS training cost?
The cost of SMSTS training varies depending on delivery method and provider. Our SMSTS training is priced at £450 + VAT, whether completed online or in the classroom.
Is SMSTS training recognised across the construction industry?
Yes. SMSTS training is widely recognised by contractors, developers, and major housebuilders across the UK. Many employers require site managers to hold a valid SMSTS certificate as part of their compliance standards.
Is funding available for SMSTS training?
Funding options depend on your circumstances. Employers registered with CITB may be eligible to claim grants towards the cost of SMSTS training, and many employers also cover the cost for their staff.
What if I miss part of the SMSTS training?
Full attendance is required to complete SMSTS training. If you miss a session, you’ll normally need to arrange a catch-up before being allowed to sit the final assessment.
What roles does SMSTS training support?
Completing SMSTS training can help you progress into roles such as site manager, project manager, construction manager, or site agent. It’s particularly valuable for anyone responsible for managing health and safety under CDM regulations.
How do I book SMSTS training?
SMSTS training can be booked directly through an approved training provider. Most providers offer flexible options, including classroom-based and online training, with weekday and weekend availability to suit different schedules.
